Baralacha La

At an altitude of 4,890 meters, Baralacha La means “a pass with crossroads on the summit.” It divides the watersheds of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers. This pass is where the Pir Panjal and Zanskar ranges meet and was once a crossroads for trade routes to Western Tibet.

Dera Baba Barbhag Singh (Mairi)

Located in the Mairi village of Amb Tehsil, the Dera Baba Barbhag Singh is a renowned holy shrine visited by devotees from across the region. The shrine is dedicated to Baba Barbhag Singh and is famous for its religious fairs.
• Location: It is situated about 3 km north-east of Nehri village. The Gurudwara here is a key attraction for spiritual seekers.
• Significance: The site is known for its healing powers, particularly for those suffering from mental ailments or believed to be under the influence of evil spirits.

Dera Baba Rudranand

This shrine was established by Baba Rudranand, a celibate recluse, and serves as another important spiritual destination in the district.
• Location: It is situated in the village of Nari, approximately 10 km from Una town.
• Significance: The Dera is a center of devotion and features an Akhand Dhuna (eternal fire) that has been burning continuously since its establishment.

Jispa

Located 22 km from Keylong, Jispa is a beautiful spot situated at the junction of two streams with the Bhaga River. It is notable for its large dry riverbed—a rarity in Lahaul—and a trout-rich river section that delights anglers. A small PWD rest house and juniper plantations add to the village’s charm.

Keylong

Keylong is the district headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti, situated at an altitude of 3,156 meters. Perched on the banks of the Bhaga River, it serves as the hub of commercial activity and the main trade route between Rohtang and Baralacha passes. During summers, Keylong is an “oasis of green fields” against a backdrop of brown hills and snow-clad peaks, a sight once described as a “barbaric jewel.”
Visitors can explore the local marketplace and enjoy views of the famous “Lady of Keylong”—a natural rock formation and snow patch that resembles a woman carrying a load. The town offers various accommodation options, including a Circuit House and tourist bungalows, making it an ideal base for exploring nearby monasteries like Khardang, Shashur, and Tayul.

Mata Chintpurni Ji Temple

One of the most significant pilgrimage centers in North India, the Chintpurni Temple is a deeply revered Shaktipeeth. It is believed that the feet of Sati fell here while Lord Shiva performed the cosmic Tandav dance, dismembering her body. The temple houses a resident goddess symbolically represented as a pindi (a stone with embedded foot imprints).
• Highlights: The temple complex features an impressive gold-plated shrine.
• Festivals: A major fair known as ‘Mata Da Mela’ is held here during the Navratras in March/April (Chaitra) and September/October (Ashwina).
• Location: The temple is situated in Chintpurni village, approximately 54 km from Una town. Note that vehicles are not allowed inside the immediate temple premises, and a short walk is required.

Rohtang Pass

Separating the Kullu Valley from the exotic charm of Lahaul, Rohtang Pass stands at 13,050 feet. Known for its lush green meadows in summer and treacherous blizzards in winter, it is a gateway that offers stunning views of the Gyephang La peaks. To the left of the pass lies the small Sarkund Lake, visited by locals in early September for its reputed medicinal properties.

Shiva Temple (Shivbadi), Ambota

The Shivbadi at Ambota village is an ancient site with a history tracing back over 5,000 years. It is steeped in the mythology of the Mahabharata.
• History: The site is believed to have been the Gurukul (school) of Acharya Drona, where the Kaurava and Pandava princes received their early education and martial arts training.
• Location: Ambota is located 38 km from Una and about 30 km from Chintpurni.

Sissu

Located on the right bank of the Chandra River, Sissu is a picturesque village adorned with willow and poplar plantations. The village is home to the temple of Lord Ghepan, the presiding deity of Lahaul, though it is not open to outsiders. Across the river, visitors can witness the magnificent Sissu Falls cascading over a cliff between two mountains. A suspension bridge provides easy access to this breathtaking waterfall, and the area serves as a habitat for Siberian wild ducks and geese during migration seasons.

Solah Singhi Dhar (Jaswan Dhar)

For adventure enthusiasts and history buffs, the Solah Singhi Dhar offers an unexplored gem. Also known as Jaswan Dhar, this ridge was once an outpost of the Katoch Dynasty of Kangra.
• Historical Forts: Hidden in the hills are two magnificent forts built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Although in ruins, structures like the watchtower and courtyard in the smaller fort remain intact. The larger fort is perched on a steep cliff.
• Views: Piplu, the highest point on the ridge, offers expansive and breathtaking views of the Gobind Sagar Lake.
• Adventure: Reaching the Bangana Forts requires a trek over a rocky trail. It is advisable to trek during the daytime as the ruins are isolated. Bangana is approximately 26 km from Una.

Tandi

Ideally located 8 km from Keylong, Tandi is famous as the confluence where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet to form the Chenab (Chandrabhaga). According to folklore, Chandra (daughter of the Moon) and Bhaga (son of the Sun) performed a celestial marriage here after encircling the vast tract of Lahaul. It is also believed to be the place where Draupadi left her body and where Rishi Vashishtha meditated.

Trilokinath

Just a short distance from Udaipur lies the highly revered Trilokinath Temple, a symbol of communal harmony where Hindus and Buddhists worship the same deity. Hindus revere the six-armed marble idol as Lord Shiva, while Buddhists worship it as Avalokiteshvara. The temple, built in the classical style with a curvilinear stone tower, is considered a pilgrimage site of sanctity comparable to Mount Kailash.

Udaipur

Formerly known as Margul, Udaipur is a fertile, low-lying area famous for apples, walnuts, and apricots. It is home to the unique Mrikula Devi Temple, famous for its intricate wooden carvings depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The temple’s exterior is simple to withstand the harsh climate, but the interior is rich in artistic quality, featuring panels of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu and other deities.
